Book Review | The Friend Zone

Our April #fomobuddyread was The Friend Zone by Abby Jimenez. Well loved across #bookstagram, we wanted to see if it lived up to the hype. And it did! ⁣⁣Kristen and Josh instantly connect, in more ways than one, as soon as they lay eyes on each other. New in town, it turns out that Josh will be the best man to Kristin’s maid of honour in the upcoming nuptials of their best friends Sloan and Brandon. ⁣⁣Although Kristin feels an instant connection, she instantly friend zones Josh as she is already in long distance relationship with Tyler who is deployed on active duty. Besides, their lifestyles are better aligned, with Tyler not interested in kids and Kristen unable to have any. ⁣⁣

Enter Josh Copeland. Hunky firefighter and all round Mr nice guy is committed to showing Kristen that they’re the perfect match. He is persistent, charming, warm and protective, but he doesn’t realise that the one thing he wants most out of life is what’s keeping Kristen away. ⁣⁣

This book was super cute and compulsively readable. The banter between Josh and Kristin is charming and at times laugh out loud funny. It was great to see an issue which many women live with day-to-day be a central focus of this book. Kristin’s growth and acceptance of herself as being enough, even with her infertility issues was nice to watch unfold.⁣⁣

The back and forth between the two started to wear a bit towards the end, and possibly went against her self proclaimed ‘straight shooter’ attitude, but otherwise I really enjoyed this one! I understood her inner turmoil, as finding yourself coming up short as what you ‘should’ be able to do as a woman can be soul destroying. A light hearted book with surprising depth and heart to boot!
